Don, eldest son of Dewey and Viola Allred Stout, departed this life 28 January 2013, at the age of 90 in Salt Lake City. Don was a beloved big brother to his two brothers and five sisters. Don attended Hawthorne Elementary, Irving Jr High and graduated from South High in SLC in 1939. Married Marie B. Luker of Pocatello, Idaho August 1943 in the Salt Lake Temple. Received BA degree from the University of Utah in 1944. Served as a commissioned officer with 9th Armored Division during WWII; awarded Silver Star for gallantry in action at Linburg, Germany. After VE day, Don volunteered for combat duty in the Pacific. He also served during the Korean War. He served his country for 37 years in the Department of Defense. Don and wife Marie were active members in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, living exemplary Christian lives with an emphasis on missionary work wherever they were including the U.S., Germany, Italy and the Azores. Don was a caring person who put others’ interests ahead of his own. However, when it came to horseshoes, he was all business and usually won his games. Following retirement, he volunteered his time and expertise in assisting senior citizens with their income tax returns and was director in the northern region for AARP. He joined VFW and assisted in funeral ceremonies of veterans. Don was a long time resident of both Layton and Brigham City. Don is preceded in death by wife, Marie; parents Dewey and Viola; son Jeffrey Paul; brother Byron; sisters Joan, Marilyn, Merle Budd (Jerry), JoLyn Fitzgerald (Dale); granddaughter Deanne Stout. Survived by brother Mel (LaNeta); sister Maureen Eldredge (Harold); children Richard (Joan), Roger (Barbara), Clifton (Deborah), Marlowe (Darlene), Michele (Kerry) Hedin, Alan (Wendy), Eugene (Denise), 41 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren. A viewing will be held Friday, 1 February at Gillies Funeral Chapel, 634 E 200 S Brigham City from 6-8 pm and Saturday, 2 February from 9-1030 am at Oquirrh 3rd Ward Chapel, 6673 S Clernates Dr (5352W), West Jordan. Funeral service is at 11 am. Interment at Brigham City Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by Box Elder Combined Honor Guard. The family wishes to thank Care Source Hospice and Superior Home Care, especially Sean, Montana and Mario for their caring services. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to contribute to the LDS Church Missionary Fund. Dad, you and Mom are our heroes.
